How To Choose A Winning Evening Gown

Hey, Sash Girls! We recently teamed up with Miss High School America 2016, Kennedy Chase, to share with you her tips on how to choose a winning evening gown! Keep reading to find out a few of her quick gown selection tips that you can apply to your shopping experience to help you find your very own winning gown!

Choosing that special evening gown is so important and so special. I was blessed enough to have a custom designed Sherri Hill evening gown from Henri’s Cloud Nine for Miss High School America! With my personality and interests mixed with their creativity, we created the gown of my dreams! I am so grateful for that experience and opportunity!

A custom gown does not always have to be the option. In fact, it’s normally not the option. There are tons of beautiful gowns out there that are just waiting for beautiful girls like you to wear. In this blog post I want to share with you my tips and tricks to finding that evening gown of your dreams!

Tip #1: Make A Fun Day Of It!

When picking that winning evening gown, you should make a fun day of it! Make sure you bring someone with you that is going to help you celebrate how beautiful you are and that truly has your best interest at heart.

Tip #2: Keep Your Personality In Mind!

When I look for my evening gown I always think of a style that really shows who I am on the inside as a person. Is your personality more sparkly and flamboyant or is it simple and sophisticated? Pick a style that not only makes you feel confident but screams your personality.

Tip #3: Color Is Key!

Pick a color that is going to make you really pop on stage and that is flattering with your skin tone. Sometimes wearing your favorite color makes you feel that much more confident and excited to “rock it” onstage!

Tip #4: Visualization!

Visualization is imperative when making your evening gown selection. Picture yourself on the stage in your gown as the queen already. Feeling absolutely beautiful in your gown is so important because when you feel beautiful that confidence and inner beauty will shine through on stage and towards the judges.

Tip #5: Try On Multiple Gowns!

You should always try on more than one gown. I know I always try on a ton of dresses before I make my final decision. You want to see what truly looks best on you and what you feel the most beautiful in.

I hope these tips help you get closer to picking the gown of your dreams! To follow my year as Miss High School America or if you have any more questions, you can follow my social media accounts below. Happy shopping!

Top 10 Most Asked Pageant Interview Questions

1. Tell me about yourself.

  • This is typically the starting point for your interview! You have the power to bring your “Brand Points” to attention during this time that your judges will most likely ask you follow-up questions about!

2. Who is your role model?

  • Try not to select a friend or family member! Imagine just how many other girls will select a friend or family member – your judge will probably be hearing the same answer multiple times and it won’t be memorable. Instead, select an individual that can relate to one of your “Brand Points.”

3. What is your greatest strength/weakness?

  • Always present yourself in the best light possible! Your stated “weakness,” really shouldn’t be a weakness, but a strength that you view as a personal weakness!

4. What has been your greatest accomplishment to date?

  • Time to become a storyteller! Take your judge on an auditory journey that they can visualize in their minds. You want to make your answer memorable, and telling a story will stick with your judges rather than just stating what your greatest accomplishment to date is.

5. What makes you unique?

  • Think about what makes you, you! Your “Brand Points” are exclusively unique to you – it will be rare to find another pageant competitor who backs the same points that you do. Be sure to exaggerate these points not only in this answer, but during your entire interview!

6. What is your career ambition?

  • Don’t just tell the judges your career ambition, but your inspiration for selecting that path as well as your game plan to reach your ultimate career goals!

7. What inspired you to select your platform issue topic?

  • Your platform should be a topic that is near and dear to your heart. Maybe you experienced a friend or family member go through a major life experience that has affected them forever, or maybe even you have! Know not only the inspiration for your platform, but your marketing plan, and why this issue is prevalent to society.

8. What do you want to gain by competing in this pageant?

  • You may have a general overview of what pageants can do for you, but why did you select this pageant to further yourself and your goals? Every pageant is different and it would be wise of you to know the mission of your selected pageant system, how your values and goals parallel with it, as well as what this pageant can do for you and what you can do for this pageant!

9. What would you tell someone who has a negative perspective on pageantry?

  • Maybe you were someone who had a negative view of pageantry in the past? Maybe your parents had negative connotations about pageants and you had to convince them to allow you to compete? Think about the areas of competitions and all that is involved in competing in your selected pageant. Will you learn how to write a resume, work on your physical fitness, obtain sponsors, and put your communication skills to work? Pageants have so much to offer young women across the globe!

10. Why do you want to be the next titleholder?

  • Think about what you can do as yourself. Now think about what you can do as yourself plus a sash and crown. What changes? Know why it is necessary for you to become the titleholder – what can you give to the system and what can the system give to you?

How To Write A Platform Statement

If you’re competing in a pageant system like the Miss America Organization, one of the key pieces of paperwork that your judges will read over and pull interview questions from is the Platform Statement. This one-page essay is the time to show your judges, before you even meet them, the passion you have for the platform you have chosen along with your marketing plan to promote both your platform and the local, state, or national competition level you are competing for.

When it comes time to sit down and write your Platform Statement, we have comprised a set of paragraph guidelines to follow to ensure that your Platform Statement is written most effectively! To keep formatting and content organization simple and easy to read, we recommend having only four paragraphs.

Paragraph 1

  • What is the problem?
  • Why did you select this issue to be your platform?
  • What is your personal relation to this issue?
  • What does the organization you work closely with do to support your cause?

Paragraph 2

  • What have you already done to promote your platform?
  • What significant accomplishments have you made regarding your platform?
  • How has the organization you work with benefitted from your efforts?

Paragraph 3

  • What will you do as Miss _____?
  • What is your marketing plan for the future of your platform as a titleholder?
  • How do you plan to fund your awareness campaigns, if needed?
  • Why is it necessary for you to become a titleholder in order to promote your platform?

Paragraph 4

  • Sum up your key points introduced in your first three paragraphs.
  • Include how you will change peoples attitudes regarding this issue.
  • End your Platform Statement with a positive notion of the future direction in which your platform is headed.

Happy Writing!
